French confidence hits 21-year low

French consumer confidence hit a 21-year low in April 2008 as households became gloomier about the outlook for living standards, despite initiatives from Nicolas Sarkozy, the President, to boost purchasing power. INSEE, the French statistical agency, said 29 April 2008 its confidence index dropped to -37 in April, 1 point lower than in March, setting a new low since the series began in 1987.
