Freedom, security and justice: the new Lisbon (Treaty) agenda

Opinion polls show that Europe’s citizens want crime and immigration-related issues to be top EU priorities, and the Lisbon Treaty provides the tools to meet those expectations. But, as this EPC Policy Brief by Jérôme Bacquias warns, success is by no means guaranteed. Torn between new opportunities and constraints, the ‘Area of Freedom, Security and Justice’ could become a giant with feet of clay. This makes the adoption of a new multi-annual blueprint with ambitious guidelines all the more necessary.
