Context launched two free web databases in August 2001. Both use the Justis.com software and can be accessed via the Context web site at http://www.context.co.uk/. The first contains the Proceedings of the Court of Justice and the Court of First Instance dating from the end of 1996 to date at the rate of c.30-40 issues per year. Of particular interest is the final issue of the year which includes useful statistical data such as the analysis of the judgements and other decisions. Like the printed publication, the database has short summaries of judgements and brief notes of opinions of the Advocates-General, information on judicial proceedings, notes on key events of the Court and new cases brought each week. The database is searchable by case name, number, catchwords, Court, date, document type or by a free text search. When hits are displayed from the results list, use the Outline on the left of the screen to navigate easily between the document fields. While there is no charge for usage, registration is required. This allows unlimited access for one concurrent user, either an individual or an organisation. A user guide is available free of charge online and the contents of the database are updated weekly or fortnightly. Visit http://www.justis.com/database/ecj_proceedings.html/ for more information.

The second of the databases, though less directly relevant to EU information, nevertheless does sometimes contain some useful press releases. It is the HERMES database containing press releases and announcements from most major UK government departments in England and Scotland. There is little content from Wales. Starting from January 2000, it contains the full texts of the references and is updated daily. Some 9500 items are issued annually, though it does not claim to be totally comprehensive. In particular where the press release or announcement comprises mainly tables it may not be included. You can try the sample database or simply register.
