French President François Hollande announced a cabinet reshuffle to his government on the 11 February 2016. He said he had instructed his government to 'act, reform and go forward'. The reshuffle took place less than 15 months before the 2017 presidential election. A previous prime minister, 2012-2014, Jean-Marc Ayrault, was named as France’s new foreign minister to replace Laurent Fabius, who announced his retirement on the 10 February 2016. The leader of the French Green Party (EELV), Emmanuelle Cosse, was named as housing minister, in what was suggested was a bid to widen President Hollande's political base ahead of presidential elections. Manuel Valls stayed on as prime minister, Bernard Cazeneuve as interior minister, Michel Sapin as finance minister and Jean-Yves Le Drian as defence minister. However news reports in early March 2016 suggested that President Hollande's public opinion ratings were falling again and his chances of securing a second term as French President in 2017 declining. His strategy based on economic recovery and political unity within the Socialist camp, was being challenged on both fronts. He was said to have alienated both the socialist component and moderate social democrats within the Socialist Party. |
