The European Commission has launched its strongest warning yet against French plans to protect 'strategic' industries from foreign takeovers. In a speech called 'Competition must drive European competitiveness in a global economy' to a conference in Italy, 3 September 2005, Neelie Kroes, European competition commissioner, said protectionism was not the right response to the challenge of economic reform. She warned it would cut Europe off' from the global market place it needed to embrace for economic growth. François Loos, French industry minister, has produced a draft list of 10 strategic sectors to keep in national hands.
