The French government unveiled a tax on health insurers and a raft of other measures, July 2008, aimed at trimming an annual €4bn overspend on healthcare.

France has one of the best health systems in the world but it comes at a high price. The health budget will amount to €152bn in 2008, about 11 per cent of gross domestic product.
