The Local.fr reported that Deputies in the French National assembly voted on the 10 October 2014 to reduce the country’s reliance on nuclear power to produce its electricity supply. It comes after environmental groups had raised concerns about safety at the country's nuclear plants. The French National Front (FN) launched a new environmentalist movement names 'New Ecology', opposing international climate negotiations and promoting nuclear energy. In July 2015 French state-controlled utility EDF bought a majority stake in the reactor business of nuclear group Areva and said it would look for partners to take a minority stake. The deal was crucial for France, which generated three quarters of its electricity from nuclear plants and needed to keep Areva alive in order to service its existing reactor fleet, as well as supporting its large nuclear industry with export contracts. |
