France’s Socialist government unveiled a controversial package of reforms to energise its economy on the 10 December 2014, including a plan to expand Sunday trading for shops that was sowing discord within the ruling party. The aim was to cut red tape and boost competition Emmanuel Macron, France's Economy Minister, presented the measures under the eye of the European Union and Germany, which had recently chided France for not doing enough to revamp its economy. The proposals would have to be agreed by the French Parliament. News sources reported in February 2015 that the French government faced the prospect of a no-confidence vote in parliament after the Prime Minister Manuel Valls had taken the rare step of forcing through the key package of reforms without an MPs vote. The vote of confidence was expected on the 19 February 2015. |
