France's environment ministry announced on 2 September 2016 the issuing of its first 'green bonds' in 2017. While initially it had indicated the country would be the first in the world to do so, it was later beaten by Poland, which released similar bonds in December 2016.

The decision was seen as part of the effort to finance environmentally friendly investments.
