Summary: France and Germany announced on 13 July 2017 plans to jointly launch the development of a new fighter jet as part of a set of measures to increase defence and security cooperation. On 25 April 2018, it was unveiled at the ILA Berlin Air Show that Airbus and Dassault Aviation had signed an initial agreement of cooperation regarding the Future Air Combat System (FCAS) project. Further information: The FCAS aims to replace France's Rafale, the Eurofighter (used by Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy and Spain) and Sweden's Gripen. This marks the end of a decades-long split since France withdrew from the Eurofighter project to produce its Rafale warplane with Dassault Aviation. France and Germany also agreed to set up a cooperation framework for the next model of the Airbus Tiger attack helicopter and for tactical air-to-ground missiles. In addition, they envisaged to work together on procuring ground systems. Defence industry experts called the move a setback to the United Kingdom and its leading arms contractor. The country unveuled in July 2018 a model of a sleek proposed fighter jet named Tempest. |
