In August 2010, the French government’s decision to expel the Roma to Rumania caused an international outcry. Even so, rather than being a new policy (France had been deporting the Roma to Bulgaria and Rumania for several years without any real discussion), it is above all a new milestone in the French political debate on immigration, integration and national identity. This paper seeks to analyse the paradoxes of the media coverage, by outlining the structure of the ongoing public debate in France dating back to the early 2000s.
