Frameworks for industrial policy in Central and Eastern Europe:

This book appears at a time when the transformation processes in Central and Eastern Europe have been continuing for almost ten years and new political and economic systems have been formed. It aims to take a deeper look at the transformation processes and the balancing of achievements and failures. The book is based on a research project directed by the editors and carried out with support from the Copernicus programme of the Commission of the European Union by a team of scholars from Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries as well as EU countries. Six CEE countries have been covered by the study: Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Hungary, Lithuania, Poland and the Ukraine. The book is organised into four sections. Section one - Conditions and challenges - gives a general assessment of the present state of economic conditions and formulates the challenges with which the CEE countries are confronted in integrating into the European and global environment. Section two - Industrial development: changes in structures, products and markets - tackles the problems of restructuring industry following aspects of change in structures, products and markets. In section three - Institutions between state and industry - the contributions circle around the conditions which support transformation and development in industry. Section four - Outlook - reprises some of the discussion in section one but this time focuses on the EU and the challenges it confronts.
