French police were hunting a motorcycle gunman on the 19 March 2012 who shot dead three children and a teacher at a Jewish school in the southern French city of Toulouse in an attack linked to the murder of three paratroopers in the same region the previous week. The cold-blooded nature and apparent extreme racist motive for the attacks shocked France and unsettled political leaders in the midst of what had been a no-holds-barred campaign for the April 2012 presidential election. The campaign had been marked by a sometimes angry debate over the issue of immigration, the integration of immigrants into French society, and even the methods of ritual slaughter involved in the production of kosher and halal meat. |
