Greece has been severely affected by the financial crisis in recent years: the Greek economy is just three-quarters of the size it was at its 2007 peak. The current Greek Government has imposed strict austerity measures in return for bailout loans from the 'troika' (European Union, International Monetary Fund and European Central Bank). However, a general election has been called for 25 January 2015, and the Syriza party, often portrayed as anti-austerity and anti-bailout, is currently leading in the polls. Some have speculated that a Syriza victory might ultimately lead to a Greek exit from the Eurozone. |
