Media sources in Moldova cited by EurActiv reported in March 2016 that former Romanian president Traian Băsescu, together with his wife, had applied for Moldovan citizenship.

While in the presidential office, Mr Băsescu tried to strengthen Romania’s relationship with Moldova, given both countries' common language and culture. Additionally, he expressed several times his belief in the future unification of the two countries, either politically or within the framework of the European Union.

Media reports stated in December that Moldova's newly elected president planned to strip Mr Băsescu of his Moldovan citizenship.
