Croatia’s former Prime Minister, Ivo Sanader, fled the country on the 9 December 2010 to avoid detention and possible corruption charges, hours before parliament lifted his immunity from arrest. Mr Sanader’s arrest had become a high priority for the former Yugoslav country of 4.5m, which aims to complete accession talks with the European Union by the middle of 2011. Zagreb needed to show convincing progress in combating organised crime and corruption in order to be accepted as the EU’s 28th member, EU diplomats said. The anti-corruption drive under Mr Sanader’s successor, Jadranka Kosor, had impressed the European Commission. On the 10 December 2010 Mr Sanader was arrested in Austria, the day after Croatia issued an international warrant for him. |
