Further information: The new law allows Russia to force foreign media to brand news they provide to Russians as the work of 'foreign agents' and to disclose their funding sources. A copy of the legislation was published by the government's online database on 25 November, saying it entered into force from the day of its publication. The European Union condemned the adoption of the proposed legislation. Background information: The 'foreign agents' law was in retaliation to the United States registering Russian media outlet RT Television by the same term. It extends to media outlets another law from 2012 which covered only non-governmental organisations (NGOs). Russia's President signed into a law on 25 November 2017 a set of measures allowing authorities to list foreign media outlets as 'foreign agents'. |
