Date: 05/06/1997 “No, there are no kangaroos in Austria,” reads the legend on a popular T-shirt in the EU's newest Alpine state. But the joke doesn't sound so funny any more to the country's first-ever European Commissioner Franz Fischler, after a recent European Commission report muddled up his homeland and the bigger place down under. The report lists what it clearly believes to be the 15 member states, splitting its statistics into “EU12” and then “EU15” - and identifying the latest arrivals as Finland, Sweden and Australia. More than enough to make any Fischler fizz - but to add insult to injury, the offending report is a tally of beef and veal production and farm structures prepared by Fischler's own Directorate-General for agriculture (DGVI). “Wie peinlich”, as they say in Austria - or should that be “'struth, mate!”? |
