First shots fired in fight for a more ‘social’ Single Market

Report of the outcome of a European Commission conference 'Conference on Fundamental Social Rights and the Posting of Workers in the Framework of the Single Market' on 27-28 June 2011.

Friction between workers' rights and economic freedom was further inflamed by a succession of rulings by the European Court of Justice (Laval and Viking cases) which made it more difficult and unclear how to implement the Posted Workers Directive. This law regulates the use of foreign labour within the European Union.
