Date: 26/06/03 By Peter Chapman SMALL businesses are to be offered crash courses in EU enlargement as part of a European Commission bid to plug the knowledge gap before ten new member states join the Union in May 2004. Under the plan, the EU's network of 200 "Euro Info Centres" will organize a host of activities from workshops and information days to individual tailor-made "enlargement clinics". Information - such as legislation and export guides - will be supplied on national markets and on specific industrial sectors most affected by enlargement. Erkki Liikanen, the commissioner for enterprise policy, said the scheme is part of an overall strategy to assist entrepreneurship as the Union takes in new members. "Enlargement, with the extension of the single market, offers entrepreneurs, from both EU member states and candidate countries, many business opportunities," said Liikanen. "They need to be informed and advised in advance to be ready and able to take up these key challenges." |
