Finland’s Prime Minister Matti Vanhanen has proposed in a speech given on the 15 January 2009 a “massive” stimulus package worth “tens of billions of euros” over the next decade to help offset the effects of the current economic crisis and tackle problems associated with the country’s rapidly ageing population.

Experts in Finland cautioned the speech lacked details and was made at a party political event, but added it remained extremely significant as it represented a shift away from the government’s more free market policies.
