The Directorate-General for Research of the European Parliament has compiled and published the eighth edition of its Fact Sheets. First published in 1979, the objective of the Fact Sheets is to provide a general audience with a general introduction to the European Union, its Institutions and policies, with a particular perspective on the activities of the European Parliament.

The volume is divided into six parts: How the European Community works; Citizens' Europe; The Single Market; Common policies; Economic and Monetary Union; External trade and economic policy. Within each part is a series of individual self-contained 'fact sheets', covering individual institutions and policies. For this new edition considerable restructuring of the contents has taken place, each fact sheet is confined to two pages and attempts have been made to create a standard layout for each section. For the policies section, for example, this includes sections for the legal basis for each policy; the objectives; achievements; and the role of the European Parliament.

The volume is an excellent overview of the EU and its activities. Generally, bibliographical references are given for legislative information, although this aspect is not entirely consistent, with an emphasis on references to information in the EPOQUE database.
