Volume 1 describes an assessment of past changes in the working age of the population and projected future changes. It illustrates the contribution of the three components of population change (fertility, mortality and international migration), and the impact of changing economic activity rates, by age and gender, on the size and composition of labour force, on labour market structure and flexibility, on the retirement pensions imbalance, and on migratory flows.

Volume 2 contains country case studies examining the demographic trends in Austria, Bulgaria, France, Ireland, Malta, the Netherlands, Poland, Portugal, the Russian Federation and the United Kingdom.
