The Spanish government's faltering efforts to broker peace with Eta, the armed Basque separatist group, narrowly won the backing of the European Parliament on 25 October 2006 following a heated debate that echoed the bitter political divisions that the peace initiative has provoked in Spain. The European Parliament adopted a resolution with 321 votes in favour, 311 against and 24 abstentions on "the peace process in Spain", which expresses solidarity with the victims of terrorism and supports the fight against terrorism and the peace initiative in the Basque Country undertaken by the Spanish democratic institutions within the framework of their exclusive competences. |
