Book abstract: This work, one of Ashgate's 'Perspectives on Rural Policy and Planning' series, explores the making, and the unmaking of peasant agriculture in fourteen European countries which constitute what is labelled Europe's Green Ring. It is organised over four parts: Part I deals with Central and Eastern European Countries - Part II The Mediterranean Countries - Part III Countries in the North of Europe. It presents an opportunity to study the differences and similarities that these countries have shown in their management of rural areas in the face increasing industrialisation. Part IV then draws on the earlier evidence to consider the way forward for rural communities and raises the prospect of re-peasantisation. The extent to which entry to the EU of the countries forming the present green ring will influence European Union agricultural policies is also explored. The volume will interest students, scholars, policy makers and practitioners in the fields of political sciences, sociology, European Union Studies and the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy. Leo Granberg is Docent, Aleksanteri Institute, University of Helsinki, Finland. Imre Kovach is Head of Department, Institute for Political Sciences, Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Hungary. Hilary Tovey is Senior Lecturer Department of Sociology, Trinity College, Dublin, Ireland. |
