the Commission has warned. The number of jobs in vehicle production fell from 960,000 in 1993 to 912,000 in 1995 and this trend looks set to continue. However, in a communication on the industry, the Commission found positive signs for the future. Sales of new cars and light commercial vehicles have slowly recovered since the slump of 1993 and huge gains have been made in both productivity and product quality.
