European Union wins Princess of Asturias Award for Concord 2017

The awards was given to the European Union (EU) on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the signing of the Treaty of Rome. According to the jury, the EU achieved the longest period of peace in modern Europe, collaborating in the entrenchment and spread throughout the world of the values of liberty, human rights and solidarity. It added that such values inspire hope in the future in times of uncertainty and represent an example of progress and well-being.

The announcement was made on 21 June 2017 and the official award ceremony was held on 20 October 2017.
