The European Union Agency for Fundamental Rights (FRA) held its 3rd annual symposium on data protection in May 2012. The event focused on the fundamental rights dimension of the Data Protection Reform package, which the European Commission proposed in January 2012. The symposium brought together about 50 key experts and stakeholders who discussed how and to what extent the Data Protection reform package is likely to impact on the fundamental rights guaranteed by the Charter of Fundamental Rights of the European Union. The discussions aimed to identify a core list of fundamental rights which are likely to be affected, either positively or negatively, by the proposed data protection rules. This FRA Symposium report summarises the discussions that took place in the different working groups and the concluding remarks for each session. |
