The Greek Prime Minister Antonis Samaras was forced to announce an early general election for the 25 January 2015 after the Greek parliament rejected his candidate for president on the third round of voting on the 29 December 2014, throwing the country's international bailout from the IMF and EU into doubt. In a statement on the 29 December 2014 Pierre Moscovici, European Commissioner for Economic and Financial Affairs, Taxation and Customs, said 'A strong commitment to Europe and broad support among the Greek voters and political leaders for the necessary growth-friendly reform process will be essential for Greece to thrive again within the euro area'. On the 30 December 2014 Mr Samaras said that the result of the election would determine whether the country remained in the eurozone. Deutsche Welle reported the IMF saying on the 30 December 2014 that it would not finish Greece's latest bailout review until a new government was formed. Authorities said the temporary suspending of aid would not hurt the economy. |
