European Parliament President Klaus Hänsch decided this week not to take the Commission to court

Date: 26/09/1996 for its failure to implement the intended ban on imports of furs caught using leghold traps at the start of this year. A spokesman for Hänsch said the majority in the legal affairs committee in favour of legal action was too small to justify proceeding and the chances of success appeared limited. Hänsch also felt a unilateral ban would send the wrong signal at a time when the Union was trying to show a united front against the Helms-Burton law.
