Summary:Compilation of information resources focusing on the election for the European Parliament, as it happened in Italy on 8-9 June 2024. It seeks to provide an overview of the electoral campaign in the country and the immediate aftermath of the election. Further information:This election takes place as part of the wider European Parliament elections held in June 2024 in the 27 Member States of the European Union (EU). In Italy, party-list proportional representation is in place to elect its members of the European Parliament (MEPs). Two levels were introduced: a national level dividing the seats among parties and a constituency level to distribute them among candidates in open lists. Five constituencies were established, each including 2–5 regions of Italy and each electing a fixed number of MEPs. The rising popularity of the far-right was at the core of the narrative prior to this election, similar to the realities across many other EU Member States. In this context, media outlets have focused particularly on the role to be played by Italy's Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in bringing different far-right parties together to form an alternative majority in the European Parliament. The elections in Italy resulted in a victory for Meloni's Fratelli d'Italia (28.8%) followed by the centre-left Partito Democratico (24.1%) and the non-aligned Movimento 5 Stelle (10%). |
