This election takes place as part of the wider European Parliament elections held in June 2024 in the 27 Member States of the European Union (EU). A Bill creating a single national constituency was approved by France's National Assembly on 20 February 2018, and formally adopted by the Senate on 23 May 2018. It was promulgated on 25 June 2018 following the validation of the Constitutional Court. The country elects 81 of the 720 members of the European Parliament.

The months preceding the election were framed by the far-right National Rally (Rassemblement National - RN) leading the opinion polls, in a wider context of gains by right-wing parties across the EU. On 25 April 2025, the French President Emmanuel Macron delivered a speech at the Sorbonne setting out its vision for the future of the EU. Media outlets also covered the collapse of relations between the French and German far-right parties, and the potential cooperation between Marine Le Pen and Italy's far-right Prime Minister, Giorgia Meloni.

The elections delivered a substantial victory for the RN (31.4%), which was followed by Macron's Besoin d'Europe alliance (14.6%) and the centre-left Réveiller l'Europe alliance (13.8%). As a consequence of this election, the French President decided to dissolve the country's National Assembly and trigger early legislative elections.
