During a plenary session of the European Parliament on 6 October 2015, the presidents of the Environment, Transport, Internal Market and Industry committees asked the European Commission about its past role in car emissions testing, and called for an inquiry into the Volkswagen scandal. A number of inquiries had been already opened in France, including two criminal investigations, and an administrative inquiry into the suppression of fraud. Elżbieta Bieńkowska, the Internal Market Commissioner, stated that the EC intended not to act until the member states had conducted their own national investigations. |
