The rationale behind the enlargement of the EU is to create a broad, free, prosperous and peaceful Europe. The end of the cold war, and of the conflict in Southeast Europe, saw a need for peaceful development, for good governance and neighbourly feelings. The difficulties of adapting to external shocks at the global level such as the acts of terrorism show us once again how important peace and political stability are for tourism. This publication brings together the different papers presented during the seminar on European Integration in the Era of the European Union's Enlargement and the Development of Tourism, held in Malta from 22-23 May 2003.

Contents: Framework Economic Conditions and Tourism Competitiveness; Cross-border Liberalization and Tourism Exchanges; Structural Funds, Sectoral Policies and Sustainable Tourism Development; European Integration and Public-Private Cooperation in the Field of Tourism; Some Concluding Remarks.
