Preview and reports of the European Council, Brussels, 22 May 2013. The agenda included the efficiency of tax collection, tax evasion and fraud, energy, employment, competitiveness and the deepenening of the Economic and Monetary Union (EMU). The summit reached a compromise deal on the savings directive after Austria dropped objections to an exchange of bank information affecting EU deposits by the end of the year. The summit conclusions committed leaders to seek ambitious information-sharing proposals on an EU-wide and global basis, pushed originally by the United Kingdom, Germany, France, Spain and Italy - nations that are testing such a system and want to launch it before year-end. On the other side, according to EurActiv, no major conclusions about energy policies were taken during this summit, with its conclusios indicating that "the supply of affordable and sustainable energy to our economies is crucial" in the current economic context. However, EUObserver reported on the 23 May 2013 that the EU leaders supported the shale gas revolution. French President François Hollande said at the conclusion of the summit that the European Union countries should consider dropping their national support schemes for renewable energies in favour of a harmonised EU approach that would send a clearer signal to investors. On the 24 May 2013, EurActiv reported that multinational technology companies such as Apple, Google and Amazon were a key focus of EU leaders' attempt to clamp down on aggressive tax avoidance at the summit. |
