Book abstract:

Coastal zone areas, which are particularly complicated to manage because of their international nature, are the focus of this latest volume in the International Land Management Series which examine the complex issues of land management in an international context and emphasise the multi-disciplinary nature of land management. The geographical focus of this book is on Europe which offers a good case study because of the extent of its coastline and the number of different national actors.

A series of edited papers are presented through the course of the book, which cover five main areas. First the general situation, philosophy and policies of coastal zone management are discussed within the European context and this is followed by an extensive analysis of the inter-disciplinary nature of coastal management. The next five chapters together provide a case study of coastal management in England and Wales with specific reference to the Solent region as well as an examination of the regeneration of saltmarshes and the decline of the English coastal resort. The final chapters of the book examine coastal management elsewhere in Europe, describing the need for a more integrated zone management partnership within the Baltic Sea and identifying the distinct lack of an integrated system of coastal management in Greece and Turkey.

Overall, this book provides students of maritime studies as well as those involved in managing coastal zones with a useful comparative study of the different approaches to coastal zone management across Europe.

Robert Dixon-Gough lectures at the land management research unit at the University of London's school of surveying.
