The European Commission urged governments on 24 September 2002 to stop providing state-backed insurance to European airlines from the end of October 2002. The Association of European Airlines said the ending of European government guarantees for war risk insurance was 'an alarming prospect'. European airlines have been seeking government backing for a European mutual fund scheme, Eurotime, to provide third-party war insurance cover. The proposal will be discussed by European Transport Ministers on 3 October 2002.
