Summary: COVID-19 has worsened tensions between China and the US, and Europe risks being caught in the middle. The EU faces the difficult task of managing its complex relations with Beijing and Washington in a way that protects the rules-based global order from further harm. This paper considers what the EU can do to reduce the risks of a China-US conflict and mitigate the effects of their bilateral confrontation, and what it should do to protect its own interests against pressure from both sides. |
