Summary:

The radical right was likely to make big gains in the 2024 European Parliament elections, with the ‘great
replacement’ theory becoming increasingly influential. The theory held that liberal elites were promoting
immigration from outside Europe to undermine ethnic and cultural homogeneity. The European population is ageing rapidly and fewer immigrant taxpayers mean higher taxes on workers, to pay for pensions, healthcare and other public services for the elderly. Europe therefore needs to import workers from the global south and to accept a multicultural society to ensure its prosperity. Mainstream politicians need to resist Right-Wing calls for limits on immigration.
