At the European Parliament's plenary session in Strasbourg yesterday (10 February), MEPs rejected the plan by 239 votes to 215x The Socialist Group had pushed through amendments to the proposal, linking tax rates on products to their environmental effects, but these went too far for the European People's Party and Liberals. However, MEPs voted in favour of the planned common savings tax system, rejecting a series of amendments seeking to exempt foreign-currency-denominated 'eurobonds' from tax.
