Summary:Proceedings of a conference held in The Hague (the Netherlands) on 31 August and 1 September 2023. Further information:In recent years, Europe has faced numerous challenges, such as the return of a war to the European continent, the consequences of a global pandemic and the growing impact of climate change. These challenges underline the importance of the rule of law, the well-functioning of the constitutional and supreme courts of the EU Member States and their smoot cooperation with the Court of Justice of the European Union. In 2021, under the motte EUnited in diversity, the Court of Justice of the European Union (CJEU) launched a dialogue with representatives of the constitutional courts of the EU Member Staes with a view to guaranteeing a harmonious relationship between the EU legal order and those of its Member States. This dialogue continued, in the second edition of the conference with the specific theme “The Rule of Law and Constitutional Diversity”. The conference took place this time in the Hoge Raad in The Hague, the Netherlands, on 31 August and 1 September 2023, under the auspices of the Supreme Court of the Netherlands and the Constitutional Courts of Belgium and Luxembourg. In four panels, the participants at the conference discussed the role of their respective courts in upholding the rule of law, and in particular judicial independence, in the European legal space, in balancing uniformity and diversity in EU law and in providing legal protection to future generations. |
