Preview of the European Commission report 'A single market for citizens - Interim report of the Commission' launched on the 21 February 2007. In its Communication of 10 May 2006 'A citizen's agenda: delivering results for Europe', the Commission proposed to launch a fundamental review of the single market. It also announced that it would present a report on the single market in the 21st century in 2007. The European Council of 15/16 June 2006 called for an interim report to be presented before the March 2007 European Council. This report responds to that request and follows on from a public consultation and public hearing held in 2006.

The report sets out a vision for the single market of the 21st century. It highlights the achievements of the single market to date and the need to adapt it in order to deliver further concrete results for the benefits of citizens and businesses, and to reinforce its contribution to economic growth and social cohesion in an era of globalisation.

The report will be followed by a full review of the single market and proposals for further action in the autumn of 2007.
