The euro area (EA17) seasonally-adjusted unemployment rate was 10.4% in December 2011, unchanged compared with November 2011. It was 10% in December 2010. The EU27 unemployment rate was 9.9% in December 2011, also unchanged compared with November. It was 9.5% in December 2010.

So-called 'peripheral' members such as Spain and Greece recorded the highest rates, of 22.9% and 19.2% respectively.

By contrast, national data from Germany, the eurozone’s bulwark, showed joblessness declined in January to 6.75, the lowest level since reunification in 1991.
