On 24 November 2016 Donald Tusk, President of the European Council hosted the 18th EU-Ukraine summit. He represented the EU together with Jean-Claude Juncker, the President of the European Commission. President Petro Poroshenko represented Ukraine. The European Union and Ukraine reaffirmed their strong partnership and shared commitment to a comprehensive reform agenda. The summit took place almost three years to the day of the beginning of the Maidan revolution, when Ukrainians protested on the central square in Kyiv, Maidan, demanding closer association with the EU. The leaders from both sides focused on reforms and visa liberalisation and discussed the progress achieved since the previous summit in 2015. The meeting confirmed a further €15 million in support of an anti-corruption programme and €104 million for public administration reform, adding to the support already agreed in the framework of the EU budget. The summit also welcomed the latest steps towards visa-free travel. EU and Ukraine leaders also discussed the implementation of the Minsk agreements. |
