Article reports on the deployment of EU troops to the Indonesian province of Aceh, expected to be completed in the following weeks. The 200-strong EU monitoring mission was agreed in Helsinki in August 2005 under a deal between the Jakarta government and the Free Aceh Movement (GAM), which had pursued an armed campaign for independence. Under the Helsinki agreement, the EU and the five Asian countries, which were to make up the monitoring mission, were to be responsible for investigating breaches of the cease-fire as well as the decommissioning of weapons, demobilising the rebels and Indonesian troop withdrawals.
