The European Union announced on 25 October 2001 that it has acceded to US demands to withdraw legislation on hushkits that would have banned older, noisier aircraft from flying into Europe from April 2002. The issue of noisy aircraft will now be dealt with on an airport-by-airport basis, by a new agreement that was reached in October 2001 at the International Civil Aviation Organisation in Montreal. A hushkit is an engine muffler designed to reduce engine noise.
