The European Union is the biggest global player in international trade and investment. The challenge in a changing world is for the Member States of the EU to maintain and improve their position and to trade their way out of the current economic crisis.

To help revitalise Europe's economy the European Commission presented a blueprint for a renewed EU trade policy on the 9 November 2010. It builds on Europe's commitment to an open, fair and rules-based trading system and analyses how trade is an engine for economic growth and job creation. The overarching aim of the future strategy is to take a more assertive approach to ensure the benefits of trade reach all Europeans.

The opinion of citizens on trade was assessed by a Eurobarometer survey, which was also released on the 9 November 2010.
