EU slaps landmark fine on Greece

On 3.7.00, the European Court of Justice imposed its first ever fine on an EU government for failing to comply with an earlier court ruling. The Greek Government had been ordered to close a waste tip on the island of Crete but did not obey. The court fined them 20,000 euros ($19,000) a day, to be paid from 3.7.00 until the tip is closed.
