The European Commission approved the most far-reaching changes in the car industry for nearly 20 years on 17 July 2002. Dealers will be able to open showrooms wherever they wish in the European Union with effect from 2005; the rest of the reforms will come into force in October 2003 and last until June 2010. Dealerships will become more like supermarkets with different brands of cars in separate areas of the same showroom.
