Europol's chief of staff Brian Donald told Britain's newspaper The Observer on 31 January 2016 that over 10,000 child refugees were missing in the European Union.

Authorities feared criminal gangs might be exploiting a large number for sex work and slave labour. Mr Donald stated that thousands had vanished after having been registered with state authorities.
